Who was Amrapali?

Amrapali of Vaishali democracy (Presently in Bihar state) in ancient India was the most beautiful woman of the world. She is the all time best. She is the only woman in the history who had been forced to prostitution by state order.

Amrapali was born in Vaishali, the ancient democratic state of India to an unknown parents. Some one found her beneath a mango tree. He and her wife adopted her as their daughter. Mango is Amra in Sanskrit language thus she was named Amrapali.

She had grown up to her youth with a magnificent look. She had a milk like white skin, her lips were as red as pomegranate, her chicks were like the roses, she had a nose like a parrot, she had a lotus eye, her neck was long as crane. Her legs and hands were long and slim. Her fingers were like the brush of an artist. Her naval was compared with the depth of a lake. There are tons of description of her beauty in Sanskrit texts.

No doubt, she was the most beautiful woman of the world.

As she stepped into her youth people of Vaishali state became crazy of her. Every body wanted to marry her. Her beauty made the city mad.

People started coming with proposals to her parents. The Lords, merchants, senators, generals of army everyone had only one wish.....get Amrapali. Her parents were perturbed with flooded proposals. They could not decide anything about her marriage.

The poor fellows, what could they do? If they decide in favor of anyone others would be angry and could create problem for them. Her beauty became her greatest enemy.

Sacrifice of Amrapali to save the unity of her country

Vaishali was a democracy in ancient India. The parliament of Vaishali was also informed of the same. Members of the democratic parliament sat to discuss over the issue. They discussed and debated a long. Every member put his own view. After long sessions they came with an unanimous decision.

Parliament of Vaishali took a unique and historical decision. It decided to make her a prostitute. It was dangerous to hand over Amrapali to any one. Others would not accept it easily. It would break the unity of Vaishali, the most powerful democracy of ancient India.

Amrapali was forced to be a Nagar (city) Vadhu (wife) that means a prostitute, by order of Parliament. She sacrificed her wishes, her married and family life in order to save unity of her country.

Unique!!! Her sacrifice was.

Everybody was then permitted to meet with and to make love with her. She was not only the most beautiful but also an expert in dance and music. She entertained Lords and mass, rich and poor, braves and cowards, everyone.

Amrapali,and Emperror Shrenik

Fragrance of her beauty, her art, her intelligence and skill in dance and music spread crossing borders of her state.

Shrenik, the bhambhasara, Emperor of powerful Magadha (Presently in Bihar state in India) dynasty was attracted to her. As Vaishali was an enemy of Magadha, it was difficult for him to come and meet with her. But he found himself unable to resist from meeting this heavenly beauty of Vaishali. He came to Vaishali in a disguise and made love with Amrapali.

Emperor Shrenik offered Amrapali to make her Empress of Magadha. Amrapali denied to be her Empress because she knew that her state Vaishali would never accept it. This marriage could trigger a battle between two powerful dynasties the mighty Magadha and the brave Vaishali. Being refused Shrenika came back broken heart to his capital Rajagriha.

Amrapali was not mentally satisfied in spite of comfort and luxury provided by the state. She never liked to be a prostitute. She hated this life. She wanted to live a genuine peaceful life.

Amrapali in Bhikkhuni Sangh of the Buddha

In between, Gautama, Prince of Kapilavastu, initiated. He sacrificed all earthly comforts and luxury in search of eternal peace. He attained enlightenment after long years of austerity.

He became the Buddha, Gautama, the Buddha. He started preaching Ariyo atthangiko maggo, the eight fold path of spirituality. He started teaching Vipassana meditation, the path of Sheela, Samadhi and Panyya. His preaching attracted large numbers of people. Magadha, Vaishali, Kashi, Koshala all the states of ancient India was flooded with his followers.

Amrapali heard of the Buddha and of his preachings. She wanted to meet him and to listen his enlightened doctrines. She managed to do so and became his devotee. She proposed The Buddha to take her in his Sangha as a bhikkhuni (Nun), but the Buddha refused to do so. He told her that there was no arrangement for bhikkhuni in the Sangha. Only bhikkhus (monks) are allowed in the Sangha.

Amrapali asked boldly why the arrangement was like that. The Buddha replied that an woman could break the sanctity of the monks. Amrapali again argued with courage whether the monks of the Buddha were so weak that they could break their vow if in touch with an woman? Buddha could not reply and took the most beautiful woman in his Sangha.

Amrapali was posted as the head of the Bhikkhuni Sangha of the Buddha

thanks Mr Jyothi for this article. i only have little doubt. i read long ago that the parliament decided to make her nagar nati(dancer) not bahdu(wife). the word nagar nati , came only after her appointment. obviously you have more knowledge and document but i doubt that no govt or king(if he is Hindu by heart) cant do this.

Hi Jyothi,

Is ashoka born for amrapali, can you please give any historical source for it

nice article..Beauty is an aesthetic consideration. When judging beauty, it's appropriate to think in terms of the whole personality...hwvr the rest of the world remained rude to her...she sustained the worst with dignity.

Hi Ciprian,

Thanks for your comment. Romania has close relationship with India.

Amrapali shaped Indian history in her own way as Vaishali and Magadh (Presently in Bihar state) were the most important dynasties in ancient India.

Thanks again,

Hi RD Dixit,

Thanks for your comment. I agree, spirituality drove the last part of her life.

rd dixit 2 years ago

This is all because of a burning craze for spirituality. May it be a nagarbadhu or ordinary woman. She aspired for the ultimate goal of this vacuous life.

Hi Arunendra,

Thanks for visiting the hub and commenting on it. You have added value to the story of Amrapali by furnishing some historical data.

However, Ashok was not the son of Bhambhsar Shrenik but of Bindusar. Bindusar was the son of Emperor Chandragupta who born at least after 200 tears from Shrenik, the Bhmbhsar.

Thanks,

Jyoti Kothari

Dear Mr. Jyoti,

you have included the Amrapali story in beautifull way. Also please manage to edit that her mother Arya Matangi was the Lover of two persons - are - A) Srenik Bimbsar ( the Magadh Emporer ) and B) Arya Pt. Varshkar ( the Maha Amatya - Prime Minister) of Bimbsar. Amrpali was daughter of Varshkar and there was a son from Bimsar Name - Som Prabh who was unknowingly appointed as Senapati ( Chief Commander) of Bimbsar. Bimbsar loved Amrapali and had a son who was Lord Ashoka after wards.

Regards to you,

Arunendra Singh

Hi Dr. Sandhu,

Thanks for your thought provoking comment. Every thing has its own pros and cons, so with Amrapali.

She wanted to marry a man. However, she could not decide her own fate. She sacrificed her life to save national interest.

This adds to her beauty.

Thanks,

Jyoti Kothari

Dr Madhu Sandhu 2 years ago

The tragic fate of a woman?

If she marry a man, she might be cursed to loose her name, beauty, respect, personality, intellect etc

&

If she becomes a nagarvadhu_ a pros for higher class people_ she can remain young and alive for centuries.

Hi Kalini,

My sources are "Buddhacharita" and "Vaishali ki Nagarvadhu". a novel by Acharya Chatursen Shashtri.

Both have depicted Amrapali nicely. Moreover, I am a practitioner of Vipassana meditation and sourced some from those texts.

Thanks,

Jyoti Kothari

Dear Sir,

I am a student of archaeology. The film version of Amrapali is very different from Amarchitrakatha Amrapali (closer to your version and Buddhacharita. From where have you got your information? I would like to know the original source of it. Could you please help me? My e-mail is kalinikhandwalla@yahoo.com

Jyoti,

This is a fantastic one. How this most beautiful dancer turned into a nun! Amazing. I had been once to Bihar but never to Vaishali. I really regret now. i have missed opportunity to visit the place of most beautiful woman.

You have reported well about Vipassana meditation. I know some people who are practicing vipassana. They are quiet and calm people.

Jyoti, great that you brought this up. This is a touching but forgotten story. After reading the hub, I actually searched Google for an artist's impression of her beauty or even an image of her statue. There were just paintings on her that I could find on the following link. See if you want to upload them on the hub:
