Diwali is truly Festival of India

Diwali, the festival of light and crackers is celebrated in India with great enthusiasm. Jaipur is renowned for celebrating Diwali festival. Men and women, kids and old, rich and poor, wise and illiterate everybody celebrate this festival in India. Large numbers of tourists, Indian and foreigners visit Jaipur especially to celebrate Diwali festival. Government bodies also encourage celebrating this festival as a means of tourism development.

The word Diwali is derived from Deepavali also spelled as Dipavali where Deep means light and Avali means line or row. People put Deep (Dipak) in rows on the days of Diwali festival. Diwali breaks barrier of cast and creed. Everybody flows in joy in Diwali days.

Hindu community in India celebrates Diwali festival to commemorate return of Rama from exile. Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu according to Hindu belief was sent to exile for 14 years by his step mother Kaikayi. The Ramayana says that he fought there a war against mighty Rakshhas emperor Ravana and won. He came back to his capital Ayodhya on the day of Diwali.

Jain community celebrates Diwali festival of India as Nirvana day of Lord Mahavira. Lord Mahavira attained salvation on Diwali night, according to Jain sacred text Kalpa Sutra. Some Jain families worship Saraswati in place of Laxmi on Diwali.

Diwali, the festival of India is Prakashotsav (Festival of light) for Sikh community. Again Prakash means light and Utsav means festival.

Maharshi Dayanand left the earth for his heavenly abode on this day of Diwali. Hence, Arya Samaj, follower of Dayanand also celebrate this festival in India

Diwali will fall on November 5 this year 2010 and Dhan Teras on 3rd.

Update: Diwali will be celebrated in Jaipur, India and overseas on October 26 this year, 2011. Dhanteras will fall on October 24, 2011 accordingly.

The hub gives a good introduction to the most enjoyed Indian festival. Perhaps the celebration is similar in other north indian cities also. In south, though the story is almost same, some rituals differ.
