Growing healthy food from organic farming: Economy, health and environment

Growing healthy food from organic farming is a must for sustainable development. Organic farming has become relevant for sustainable development and agricultural economy.

Thousands of farmers worldwide are applying this method nowadays and getting fruitful results. One has to use organic fertilizers and pesticides in order to keep the land fertile.

Worldwide rise in population led the farmers use more and more chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Governments of various countries had also encouraged usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, that resulted into increased food production. The governments were happy and so the farmers. They overlooked other side of the coin at that time.

Increased use of chemicals had a negative impact on health and environment. Chemical fertilizers are now costlier with its increased demand and hike in petroleum price. Using chemical fertilizers and pesticides for farming does not remain lucrative today.

It also increases demand of petroleum products. Most of the countries are not self sufficient in petroleum products and dependent on imports. It increases their import bill that negatively affect their international trade balance. It also has a negative impact on economy of farmers especially in developing nations. Hence, it brings economic crisis and financial problem to farmers, people and the country at large.

Chemical pesticides contain hazardous chemicals. Those are not only injurious to health but also have a negative impact on environment. It contaminates soil and water resources. It is deadly for the microbes in the soil. It also kills friendly creatures and insects. This intensifies imbalance in the ecosystem.

Workers of Organic farming come under green collar job and green collar job is the most lucrative job at present.

Organic farming is Eco-friendly and energy efficient. It reduces usage of petroleum products thus reduces carbon-di-oxide in the environment. In turn it help fight global worming.

Situation is alarming. Problem has reached a critical state world wide. Solution lies in organic farming.

Organic farming: The new way

One can use organic manures such as slurry, wormy-compost and Nadap compost in place of chemical fertilizers. Avoiding chemicals and using above mentioned organic products lead to germinate worms in the field. It also helps in growing microbes needed by the plants and trees.

The worms help field by making it porous. It increases supply of oxygen to the plants. They also produce useful manures. Increasing level of microbes present in the field helps the plants and trees find their livelihood.

Organic pesticides are also useful. It does not harm fly, butterfly and other insects useful for productivity of food grains and fruits. They are natural transporters that help germination. Normally, organic pesticides do not kill insects. However, it keeps them away from the field. This helps to protect natural ecosystem

HOW TO PREPARE ORGANIC MANURES and PESTICIDES

One can use cow-dung or slurry to prepare organic manure. Slurry is the best food for worms. One has to keep slurry on beds especially made for preparing wormy compost. It should be under a shed. Worms are sensitive of heat and sun rays.

Put few worms in the beds of slurry. Water it twice daily and see the result. Worms will be multiplied and multiplied. They will eat slurry and convert it into wormy compost, the best of all manures. One can use worms itself in the field to restore oxidization of plants and trees.

One may use residues, organic wastes etc. to prepare compost. Dig a hole at some place for this purpose. Put all waste materials in that hole and keep it there for some time. Water it daily. It will be automatically converted into fertilizer.

One can prepare very useful pesticide mixing cattle urine with margosa leaves. Put cattle urine in a copper vessel. Mix margosa leafs with it. Keep the mixture for some days in a cool place. Reaction of copper with cattle urine will make it a good organic pesticide. Margosa leafs will enhance its intensity.

There are several other varieties of organic pesticides. One can prepare those as per utilities.

India has developed very good infrastructure for all these processes. Government of india encourages preparing wormy compost.

Organic farming or plantation needs less irrigation. it saves valuable natural resource water, In this way. Organic farming does not require deep digging of the field. Worms do it naturally for the plants. It decreases use of tractors, hence, soil depletion. Again soil is a valuable natural resource. Decreasing use of tractors also means lesser use of petroleum products. And we know that uses of petroleum products increase green house effect.

Being a gardener I've found that cutting up hot peppers and tobacco leaves and letting the mixture soak for a few days after blending them makes a great pesticide. Either one alone works but it works better when combined. I've never tried cattle urine because I don't have any cows.

John,

Organic food is healthier. When a farmer puts chemical pesticides in the field its residue remains with food grain and fruits. These go into our body and harm it. Organic food is free from these hazardous chemicals.
