How to Be Hopeful (and not cynical) during tough times
63Do not give up hope
There are tough times in life. We may face severe physical, economical, mental and social or financial problems that seem impossible to overcome. We become nervous and depressed in those times. Human instincts and emotions are bonded with its survival needs and Tough times threat our survival. We fear tough times and start worrying because it puts our survival at stake. This is natural but worrying is not a solution.
Many people are facing now tough time because of global recession. Economic conditions are going worse in many parts of the world. Even the rich people and countries are in problem. This some times convert into individual or social crisis. A large number of people have lost their homes, others are struggling with their health care. It becomes traumatic for many.
There is a famous bestseller "Tough times never last tough people do". You may refer to this book.
So what should we do in these situations? Should we Keep worrying or try to find out a way to get rid of the situation?
In Chinese language the word 'crisis' is written as mixture of two characters i.e. danger and opportunity. It implies in the word that crisis is not only a danger but also an opportunity!
It is generally advised that we should not give up hope in these situations. There is a dawn after every dark night. No situation is ever lasting. There is an end to everything. If the good time has gone the bad time will also go. Nothing is permanent. Every thing in the nature follows a rule, the rule of impermanence.

Think, consult and pray
Instead of worrying, start thinking. Analyze the root cause of problem. Root cause analysis is becoming a major tool for the present days managers and analyzers. When you have found root cause start working to eradicate it. Consult some experts, family members, elders or friends to find the solution. You can also start reading some books on the topic that may lead you the way to solution. You may listen to audio cassettes or view video tapes, Those may also be proved useful. Lots of materials are available in internet in this topic. You may surf the internet to read those.
It is generally seen that when we are in problem, we isolate ourselves. This only enhances the problem. Please do not isolate yourself. Talking to someone else generally reduces tension and stress. Many times we find some way out during conversations.
Physical exercise, games and sports also help reduce tension and stress. Do little free hand exercise in home or go to a gym. Be sporty. Start playing your favorite outdoor or indoor games.
Love is another strong emotion to bring us out from the nervousness of tough times. Love some one or be loved. It gives us immense strength to fight with the tough times. Love makes us emotionally strong.
unethical practices enhance problems. Try to be ethical. Ethics also give us strength to fight with tough times.
Some people have a tendency of keep worrying. They even worry for petty matters. One of my mentors Mr. Kumarpal V. Shah has suggested me some very good ways to fight these types of situations. He advised me,” Let go the pretty matters and let God the matters beyond your control.”
Prayer is also a very good technique to overcome difficult situations. When we feel nervous or depressed, we feel ourselves week. Prayer gives us strength. We feel that almighty is with us. We can pray to anyone on whom we have faith. Please remember that prayer should come from the deepest of the heart.

Blessing in disguise
We can also take some motivational help from councilors. Some times, we require help of psychologists or even psychiatrists when we reach to a critical mental condition. They can help us to come out from a locked in state. If some one has reached to a certain critical condition he or she may require medication to get rid of that condition.
If the situation goes very odd and above mentioned do not work, we can take leave. We may go for outing or for some other entertainments that help us forgetting painful situations and painful moments for some times. It works like a pain killer. Do not make it a habit otherwise this habit will convert into a escaping tendency.
in fact, one has to take rest for some time and be fresh. Acquire strength in those days and fight back.
Yoga and Meditation are the best things to practice during these days.. It changes our minds at deepest level. Yoga and meditation can help us changing at sub-conscious level. These can even change our emotions and instincts. These strengthen us to fight with tough times and tackle the problem appropriately. Yoga plays a vital role in curing physical ailments (mental too) whereas meditation is the mightiest tool for our over all development.
Conclusion: When we fight back, we feel strong. Most of the times, we emerge as a winner. An entirely new horizon opens at critical times. Our hidden powers come out. So, now onwards, when ever face tough times, fight it. You will feel that tough times are blessings in disguise.

Yes prayer works.
Nat
Certainly. When my mother went through chemotherapy for breast cancer, prayer was an excellent companion. I'm one of those persons who definitely draws strength from prayer. On the route I take to work everyday there is a telephone box with a picture of Jesus. It's been there since last year, and even though it rains quite some where I live, the taped paper is still there. So as I go to work each morning I pray to be surrounded by good, kind people and to be the best that I can be for that day- although sometimes this is easier said than done. LOL! Cynicism in any case doesn't help, again great hub you have here!
Great hub, and prayer certainly does help!
Haribol, Jyoti. it was precisely during such a devastation that i took up bhakti yoga. I had fortuitously received a copy of "easy Journey to other Planets", then a year later someone asked me to visit a lecture on bhakti yoga. after awhile, I found that it became a source of solace to me.
Then, I was "forced" to live in an ashram, since my roomates didn't like that I was a vegetarian. Another thing I have discovered, of course, as an astrologer now is that the 36th year is a time of reckoning and devastation as it is the time for the maturity of the planet saturn.
So, it was my karma to go through this devastation and, fortunately, ended up going to visit the lotus feet of my guru. Something I would never have thought about doing years earlier, when I was a dentist inthe Army. It was a blessing, no doubt.
BTW, I lost everything material.
