Unemployed Youth in India: Problems and solutions of unemployment

76

By JYOTI KOTHARI

Are you an unemployed youth in India?

Are you unemployed? Are you among unemployable? Are you behind the race? If it is like so you have to know the techniques to be employed and to rise in the corporate ladder like many others.

Read this hub to get a blue collar or white collar job. India has the potential and so you!!!!

India is shining. India is progressing with an amazing growth rate. Growth rate of India is the second highest in the world after that of China. The youth force of India are contributing lot to the same. It is believed that principal reason behind Indian progress is its youth force, highest in number in the world. However, there is a problem. Huge number of Indian youth are not only unemployed but unemployable.

There are two new world leaders China, in manufacturing sector and India, in service sector. Large number of white collar jobs are waiting for suitable candidates. Indian youth force, behind the progress of India, is mainly engaged in IT. India is a leader in software.Software industries in India are continually offering white collar jobs besides some blue collars.

India is also world leader in BPO (Business process out sourcing) and KPO (Knowledge process out sourcing). Large number of call centers are contributing to the industries and trades of America the US, UK, Australia, Japan, European Union, Canada and many other developed countries. BPO sector needs large number of blue collars. KPO industries require and offer white collar jobs.

IT industries has seen a tremendous boom in India. This industry has employed large number of educated youth with handsome salary. Normally, IT is the highest paid sector. Management, banking, finance, retail, telecommunication, entertainment etc. are some other new sectors that helped India in her tremendous growth.

Indian graduates in a Jobless dilemma

Typical problem

These sectors has started facing a typical problem. Despite a large number of educated youth, there is a shortage of skilled manpower. This is the dilemma. There are unemployed youths and the companies are facing shortage of manpower.

A recent survey throws light on the problem, problems with the educated youth. They are mainly lacking three types of skills.

1. Comunication skill

2. Analytical skill and problem solving

3. Domain.

While in interview approximately sixty percent candidates are screened due to lack of communication skills. Rest twenty five percent are screened for analytical skills and five percent for their lack of knowledge in their respective domain. Hence ninety percent of educated youth force are lacking in one of these three main skills required for job and employment.Only ten percent of educated force of India is employable. Employers are struggling hard to attract them with huge pay-packages that is increasing their production cost significantly. The employers are loosing their competitive edge in global markets. Global slow down only adds to the crisis. Corporations are now facing dual problem.

The problem lies in the education system. The Indian education system has a mismatch with the requirements of the industries. Institutes teach what ever they want. Institutes do not teach what industries require. Industries do not require what institutes teach. The syllabus committees has not been interfacing with the industries. Many big industries have set-up their own in house training program to fight with the problem.

Most of the newly employed youths are compulsorily undergone employers own training program. This enhances cost of employers enormously. It also wastes time.

The problem and solution have two aspects: Individual and collective.

As an individual you have to choose your courses carefully. You have to interact with the industries to know their requirements. You must choose an institute very carefully. Ensure that they are covering above mentioned three aspects in their syllabus. It is in your best interest to ensure that your institute is interfacing with the requirements of industries before you admit into it.

What should be done as a general measure to solve the problem?

The one point solution of the problem is a change in education system, a radical change. There must be an interface among Government bodies looking after education, Universities, all India committee of technical education and the representatives of the industries. The institutes must educate as per industries' needs.

Have these done, India will not face problem of unemployability and the youth force of India will not be remain unemployed.

Gold-paved Gulf cities mere mirage for Indian migrants

Start your own business.

Are you already a pass out of an institute and still unemployed? ? Are you disgusted and depressed? facing tough times in your life? Are you unable to find a way out? Do not worry. Be hopeful. There is an opportunity for you too.

You can also motivate yourself to start your own business. It is not very difficult.

Business does not require huge amount of money as opposite to popular belief. The qualities you need to start a business is attitude, knowledge and will to start your own business.

It is better to be trained under a skilled and successful business owner and need not to bother for an admission in a reputed institute. A successful businessman can teach you much more than a renowned institute. Moreover, he will train it practically instead of mere theory.

Once you find a successful businessman, ask him for an apprenticeship. It will be in your interest not to ask money or salary for the same. If he gives any compensation, it is good. If he does not pay, do not bother. Try to learn best practices in business.

Think the business house as an institute. Do not take it as a job. Learn as much as you can. This learning will be a life time asset for you. It will then probably enable you to start your own business and get full control of your economic and financial life.

Should Govt. interfare into the problem to solve it?

Hi,

Jyoti Kothari,

and

Every one.

I am one of them who are facing this problem.I am a B-Tech graduate currently looking for a JOB, but I am unable to--- .A part from that

"Unemployed Youth of India: Problems and Solutions"

This is a good hub going on here.

Every one is making comments on GOVERNMENT, Academic Syllabus, Industry Requirements and relation between them and related things that are causing this problem.

You are all right but according to me this is a lope of six problems we will never come out of it according to current situation. But it will take another 60 years to come out of this loop with the contribution of a strong involvement by a community of tired-less hard people.

AND I AM ALWAYS WORKING ON IT.

SIX PROBLEMS:

1. parents

2. students

3. Educational Institutes

4. Industries

5. GOVERNMENT.

6. POLITICIANS(Political based Financial agreements and traps by OUR Politicians Attracted to Personal Benefits offered by OUTER COUNTRIES for their own benefits)

MONEY and POSITION these two are the main things that are making the above six things as SALVES for ever.

The sixth thing is ruling the remaining five things.

So the fifth one is acting as a catalyst in a chemical reaction.

fourth one is always think about how to earn money by completing their Projects. But sometimes they will struggle about man power but consultancies will solve that problem by providing Highly educated people for small payments.

And the THIRD one is a Devil for students as well as for patents. It will drink blood of parents in the form of money and the blood of students by creating competition in the market and by providing the Quality-less education that will not useful to get the job.

And the second one is the only resource for the others. It thinks it knows every thing but it don't use it's power to over come their own problems.

The first one, it is selfish thing. And it is good for their own Second one. And it never think about country's future. It always compares their financial status with others and always forces their own second ones.

like this Every one is cause for this.

So first of all every one have to think about it and discuss about it and convert it in to an action. But do not leave it as a discussion.

opinion Discussion Action.

I think I am not arguing with any one. After brief discussions and in depth observation I have got this opinion.

CONCEPT:Unemployed Youth of India.

PROBLEMS:1.Parents with multiple purpose and multiple directional desires about their children in their mind, who may or may not have knowledge about our Education system AND if any one asks who might answer like "we are doing this for our children's best future " and so on--------.

2. Students who are forced by parents of different categories as mentioned above. Students with blurring goals. Skilled Students who are attracted to high pay-scale jobs that are neither related to their goals not related to Academic Subject.Students who are influenced by other high salaried job holders.----e.t.c.

Think about other things as you can.

where are we!?

Think about our country's growth.

In which direction we are growing.

Financial growth is not a growth.

Dear Mr. Kothari,

Although your hubpage thoughts are a good 2years old, the problem you have mentioned is very much relevant till date. I agree that our educational system is much flawed and the government has an important role to play.

However, in a developing economy the role of NGOs and society in solving the problem of unemployment can come in handy in the presence of a crippled government.

We at Unnati, have trained for free and provided employment in reputed organizations for over 1500 underprivileged, unemployed youth(above 18yrs) in the last few years. The vocations could be BPO, retail, guest care office/ hotels, industrial painting, industrial tailoring, driving. Based on the youth's educational background, attitude and aptitude, a suitable vocation is selected and in 70days the transformation is there to see.

Hi Jyoti,

You have done excellent job by creating this platform. I think, every university syllabus committee should organize meetings with industrialist or technical managers. I am talking specifically about engineering. Currently I'm working as an Electrical Engineer but I'hv to admit that whatever I studied in BE (E&TC) was nowhere useful and it was all outdated syllabus. Here you can not blame students. They work hard to score good mark but at the same time syllabus should worth it. Professors should take open book exams in the class and should test the problem solving abilities of students. On the other hand, engineering assignments and journals means copy paste. This is a very serious problem. Every university must update their syllabus according to industry and technology development.

India is shinning as you rightly said in your hub and that is in service sector and not in manufacturing sector unlike China. It is only the IT sector and the IT boys of India have brought glory to India. But it is a dependable sector and not an independent sector as like that of manufacturing sector. It depended on developed country like US, UK, Australia, Japan, European Union, Canada and many other developed countries. BPO sector needs large number of blue collars. KPO industries require and offer white collar jobs. That is why US very often bringing lot of restriction on IT Indian companies in USA. If we come to the question of unemployment, we can not and should not be satisfied with few such IT industries where only a very insignificant percentage of Indian population is employed. You rightly said every business house is an Institute. It is not the only theoretical few Institute of India who can solve the unemployment problem but produce a few individual for white collar job only bringing a demoralizing effect on the other skills of rural sector. What was said by Gandhi once was correct. Unemployment can not be solved in India bypassing the rural skill and small scale industries apart from big industries. Gandhi showed it through his while of Charka.

Hi nice article...

I have something to add. People from villages of india have these difficulties. How can we solve these problems? We people who get rare chances to get good education and all have to come forward and help them to come to main stream.Often what happens is people who get succeeded in life forget their past and move way from the their old place. We should be ready go back through our path of life and help the people we meet there.Helping doesn't means giving money, it simply means sharing the knowledge you aquired in your life from your experience. Every one should ready to do that, we can not simply blame the government for all these problems. We have to join the great effort to make our people smile.

thanks

Expecting more on "Starting Busines" from you.

Hi Rupa Sen,

Thanks for your comment. I am partially agree with your view. Large numbers of Indian youth are doing well. They have their dream and goal.

However, in many cases, your observation is true.

Jyoti Kothari

Rupa sen 2 years ago

90% of Indian youth donot have a dream .They take education as something they've got to pursue as an engagement business.Lack of seriouness, and hollow concept about themselves and the fast changing market make them a liability of the society.Alittle awareness about the market around would definately make them choose the right subjects that would latter fetch them a decent job as livelihood also they would be more prpductive to the society

india suffering for a big problem that is work ..lack of work... we have to create work... them we can solve unemployment problem... india has big man power country.. we have to use it... ...how can we create the work ...that we have to solve...i will b touch with u....

Hi Selva,

Concept about politicians are similar everywhere in the world. Most of the people are money minded nowadays. Why only to blame the politicians?

Politicians are always at the top of the economy-Pyramid, so they reap the maximum benefit of any system.

It is to be remembered that we the people elect them. Why are not we careful while voting and electing them. It is observed in many surveys that educated and upper class people are reluctant to poll. We should come forward to eradicate corrupt politicians!

Thanks for comments.

Jyoti Kothari

selva 2 years ago

The politicians never allow any Govt. to solve the problems of unemployed youth. Because all private Institutes are run by them and their money mined colleagues. How do we expect a severe action from them to solve the problems of unemployment?

They want only money. They won't care about the future of Indian youths. Companies always give preference to fake experienced people. They won't even check if the candidate is properly got the degree.

A sudden Change in Educational system is impossible in India. They can only change the Syllabus not their money mined principles.

Beri Sequeira 2 years ago

The problem with the education system is that they pressurize student as much as possible with the work load and just expect them to be motivated on their own. There is very little emphasis on truly inspiring any student. Once any student is truly inspired they will definetly stand out in their field.

I feel that many very successful students are motivated only because of their need to make a living. That kind of motivation won't necessarily last life long. The other factor that is almost completely ignored is time management and balance. Students are expected to ignore all other aspects of their life other than studies. Sports are taught at schools but are not sufficiently encouraged. The attitude of most teachers towards sports is negative.

Maintaining balance in life especially under highly stressful situations is a very important factor in professional as well as personal success. This is also mostly ignored.
